Payless ShoeSource filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of April, closing 400 of its roughly 4,000 stores. Currently, they’re waiting for permission from federal bankruptcy court in Missouri and their landlords to close up to 400 more stores.
For now, they’re releasing a list of 122 that are for sure slated for closure, according to Consumerist.
This is obviously terrible news for the people who will soon be out of work when these stores close.
When they filed for bankruptcy, the shoe store had less than $1 billion in assets and more than $10 billion in liabilities. Their plan at one point was to close up to 1,000 stores—25 percent of their locations.
“This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” Payless CEO W. Paul Jones said in a news release at the time of the bankruptcy filing. “We will build a stronger Payless for our customers, vendors and suppliers, associates, business partners and other stakeholders through this process.”
As more people shop on the internet, multiple retailers are closing stores. From JCPenney and Macy’s to Sears and Kmart, seeing empty stores at malls is becoming a pretty common occurrence. Smaller stores are also following suit, from Abercrombie & Fitch to Guess.
If your local Payless store is not on the newest list, it is either not currently up for closure or still under negotiation.
