When buying an area rug, first measure the floor where you plan to use it. Buying the wrong size will make it look too small or large for the space you have available. Look for a style that complements your décor; it is easy to find traditional, modern, casual and other designs in practically any color you can imagine.

When looking at the rug sizes, read carefully. Some manufacturers will list a common size, like 5 feet by 7 feet, but the actual measurements may differ. For example, some brands list a certain size rug as 8 feet by 10 feet. Reading further, the product description explains that is actually 7 feet, 10 inches wide by 10 feet, 6 inches long; these few inches could make a difference when the rug is put down. Knowledge is power in terms of size, so do your research.

Some area rugs will require rug pads to make them anti-slip, while others do not. This requirement should also be specified in the product description. You don’t want your rug to move around underfoot, because this could easily make someone fall and get hurt. If you plan to use your area rug in a well-used part of your home such as under the kitchen table, look for durable, stain-resistant materials like polypropylene. Washable rugs are also an excellent choice for places that are exposed to heavy foot traffic, children or pets.
