Buying Guide
Some auto accessories and parts are designed to look great and do little else, while others are more practical and are designed strictly for function and safety. Novelty license plate frames do serve a purpose because they hold the plates in place, but you can go all-out with one that is studded with rhinestones and other faux gems.
If you’re thinking about going for something like this, keep in mind that it will draw attention to your vehicle and increases the possibility of theft and vandalism. If you want to get a blingy frame or a similar accessory for your car, look for features like anti-theft screw caps.
Car mirrors fall into a different category, though, and you can’t really play around with them. That can make them unsafe. The mirrors that come standard with vehicles might always not perform as well as you need them to, though. You can improve on this by getting replacement mirrors and accessories that help with your vision.
Almost every rearview mirror has an anti-glare function, also referred to as a “day-night” mirror. How do they work? When there is a car behind you and its headlights are reflecting off the mirror, you simply adjust it by hand or it adjusts automatically. If the one does not work well, you can easily replace it with a new one; most replacement rearview mirrors have a universal fit.
Although auto technology has come a long way, factory side mirrors can still have blind spots. And even though today’s vehicles offer blind-spot detection safety features, yours may not be up to par. Small blind spot mirrors are inexpensive and stick onto side view mirrors to provide wider views of the side and rear of vehicles. These are sold in sets of two, in nearly all cases.
What to Look For
- If you want to buy a new license plate frame, measure your old one first and write the numbers down to use when shopping.
- Before buying any kind of replacement mirrors for your vehicle, read the product description to check the measurements.
- Check the legality of replacement auto parts in your state before shopping.
- Stick-on blind spot mirrors can be round or elongated, but they should be ultra-thin. Also look for ones that are rust-resistant and waterproof.

Isn’t it crazy to think that the first cars did not have rearview mirrors? And believe it or not, the first rearview mirror was not designed with safety as a priority. It was invented by Indy race car driver Ray Harroun in 1911.
At the time, race cars had two drivers instead of one; the second, or ancillary rider was a mechanic who told the driver what was in back of them. Harroun won his race using the first rearview mirror, and soon after that they started appearing in passenger cars.
