If you’re a fan of coffee but don’t always have enough space in your kitchen for all the things associated with it, it may be time to get a coffee cart. Similar to a bar cart, a coffee cart is a lot like it sounds: a cart on wheels where you can place your coffee-related things, such as coffee beans or grounds, cups, coffee syrups and more. Some people keep the coffee maker on the kitchen counter as it needs to be plugged in, and place the rest of their coffee-related essentials on a coffee cart nearby.

Coffee carts save your precious counterspace for more important items, and allow you to have the flexibility to move around your coffee items. If you have guests over, for example, you can wheel your coffee cart over to the living room so everyone can make their coffee just the way they like it. A coffee cart also adds a little visual interest to your space, shifting the eye from the kitchen counter to another piece of furniture.

When selecting a coffee cart, first decide what you’re going to keep on it. This will help you determine what size coffee cart you need. If you’re going to be keeping your coffee maker on it, for example, you may need a bigger and sturdier cart than if you were keeping your coffee maker on the kitchen counter. Also consider whether you’re keeping things like cups, spoons, grounds, syrups, sugar and other items on the coffee cart.

• In many homes, décor is highly important. If that’s the case in your space, then consider what you want your coffee cart to look like. For example, if you have a traditional or farmhouse aesthetic, a wooden coffee cart would fit in nicely. If you have a more contemporary or minimalist space, you may consider a cast iron or stainless steel coffee cart looks better. It all depends on your taste and your home décor style.
• Consider how mobile you want the coffee cart to be. While they all come with castors or wheels, you may not want it to move around too much. If you mostly want the cart to remain stationary, be sure to get one which comes with locks or brakes so you can ensure it stays put. If you want the flexibility to move the cart around your home, then look for one which rolls smoothly over different floor surfaces, like hardwood, tile and carpet.
• If you want the coffee cart to blend in with your kitchen space, opt for one that is a similar height to your kitchen counters. This way, the eye doesn’t get drawn down too much by the height disparity.
• For some shoppers, versatility is key. In a few years, for example, you may want to use the coffee cart for something else. For example, can it be used as a bar cart? Can your kids use it to keep their arts and craft supplies? If you want the ability to use it for multiple purposes, be sure to think ahead and consider how else it can be functional.
