Buying Guide

However hard you work, it’s a good bet that your purse works even harder. Not only does it have to carry around your phone, credit cards, makeup and assorted nick-knacks, it has to look good while doing it. And while there will always be a time and place for petite little clutches, there’s nothing that gets it all done like the everyday, crossbody purse.

As you might imagine, crossbody purses are so named because of the way they’re worn: On the side, with the strap hanging across your body. They tend to be the largest purses, but they aren’t necessarily bulky. There are plenty of sizes and looks to choose from, and it’s all about finding the one that can carry the essentials and match the majority of your outfits.

Let’s talk fashion first. Remember that any kind of purse is an accessory. It doesn’t have to match your clothes so much as complement them. Solid colors are always a safe choice, and you can always rely on sequins or some fun textures if you want them to stand out. Solids can actually be a great match for patterned clothes, and the converse is also true: That checkered or herringbone bag can be the perfect counterpoint to a basic black dress. Whatever you choose, make sure you keep your lifestyle in mind. Light colored purses can stain very easily of you’re prone to spills.

While we’re on the subject of durability, the material matters a lot. Quality leather is a great choice, as long as you don’t mind the higher price point and the fact that it might be a little heavier. Quality leather purses will stay viable for years, as long as you’re committed to a little extra upkeep. Patent leather is a good choice if you want a glossier finish that won’t make your purse look like a messenger bag. Animal lovers might want to go for synthetic leather, which is still waterproof but may not be as scuff-resistant. Suede has a softer feel and more distinctive look, but might stain easier. Other more affordable fabrics include nylon, neoprene and canvas, and each can hold up well as long as the stitching is good.

Don’t forget to give some thought to the interior of that purse. Obviously, you’ll need enough space to carry around all your usual things, but you may need some things more often than others. Pockets can be a lifesaver in that regard. If you carry around a ton of gear, consider something with a lot of compartments to help you keep them organized — and maybe an external, easy-access pocket for your ID and common credit cards. If you normally travel light, you might be better off with a single flap opening that lets you reach in and get what you need.

Finally, give a little thought to the strap. Durability is key here, of course: Even the toughest leather strap isn’t going to last if the fasteners are shoddy. You’ll also want the strap to be eye-catching without being inconvenient. Chain straps are shiny and all, but they do tend to get caught on sequined dresses.

What to Look For

Whether it’s a spilled drink or too much time spent sitting on grimy tables, your purse is bound to get a little dirty from time to time. There’s no reason it has to stay that way, though. Most vinyl or canvas purses can be wiped clean with a solution of water mixed with a few drops of detergent. If you’ve got a leather purse, you may want to use an approved leather cleaning cream. Many ink stains can be gotten out using a little rubbing alcohol, but you may want to patch-test first if you’re trying to clean the exterior.

It’s just bad form to set your purse on the floor for any  length of time, but did you know it might also be poor financial practice? That’s according to the tenets of feng shui, the ancient Chinese system concerned with the flow of energy around both living and nonliving things. If you keep your purse on the floor, it apparently shows a general disregard for the items in that purse – especially those credit cards and cash. Hence the Chinese proverb, “a purse on the floor is money out the door.”
