Buying Guide
As delicious as cookies are, they have a shelf life. If you freeze baked goods, you can get up to a year of life out of them, but otherwise, you’re looking at a couple of weeks, max. With many home-baked cookies, you’ll often see a significant loss of freshness as early as a couple of days after they were baked.
Heat sealing your cookies is a great way to keep them fresh longer. Heat sealers come in a variety of sizes and builds, but the concept is similar among all of them. They use heat to seal bags and lock products inside, preventing air and moisture from getting in. When you’re ready to enjoy your baked treats, simply open the bag and retrieve your cookies.
Before you buy a heat sealer, it’s important to consider how you’ll use it. Many heat sealers are designed with snack bags in mind. So when you open a bag of packaged snacks and enjoy, instead of closing it up with a twist tie or chip clip, you’ll grab your handy heat sealer and close it up. These heat sealers are designed to work with a variety of bag types, including foil and polyester.
If you have fresh-baked goods, or you simply don’t want to leave your treats in the original packaging, you’ll want to look into bags that work with your sealer. Crafters often use poly bags, which can work with some heat sealers. These are great for wrapping up treats for gifting, but you can also use them to seal up your own baked goods for later snacking.
The countertop model of heat sealers is fairly common. These are small enough to stay on display in your kitchen without getting in the way, or you can slide them into a cabinet when you aren’t using them. There are also portable heat sealers that will fit into a bag or purse so that you’ll always have one on hand.

What to Look For
- Heat sealers can be an eco-friendly option. Instead of loading snacks into zip-top bags that will soon be tossed into a landfill, you can keep them in the original bags and containers. It also frees up the space you once used for storing extra zip-top bags.
- After you’ve completed the sealing action, double-check to ensure you have a firm seal. Some sealers have multiple sealing lines to provide extra reinforcement.
- Heat sealers aren’t just for cookies and other snacks. You can also use them to seal crafting tools, office supplies and other household items. A heat sealer can also help you get a firm seal on your cereal before sliding it back into the cardboard box.
- Most heat sealers have multiple heat settings. In many cases, the lowest setting will do, but check the instructions for specifics.
- Warm-up time can vary from one heat sealer to another. Some warm up right away while others take a minute or more. In most cases, though, the process of sealing bags using a heating tool is fairly fast.
- Some heat sealers are small enough to keep in a purse or bag to take on the go with you. If you’ll be using that functionality, keep power requirements in mind. Your heat sealer will likely have a power cord, so you’ll need an outlet nearby before you can use it. Some heat sealers are battery-powered, but they might not be small enough to take on the go with you.
- If your heat sealer will be on your countertop, it might be worthwhile to choose one available in vibrant colors or a more classic design. This can enhance your décor rather than take away from it.

Adding chocolate chips to dough to make cookies might seem like a no-brainer today, but there was a time when chocolate chip cookies weren’t available. Ruth Wakefield, who owned the Toll House Inn with her husband, was baking cookies in 1938 when she decided her pecan drop cookies needed a little chocolate. Her initial idea was to use baker’s chocolate, but she was out, so she decided to break up some of the semi-sweet chocolate bars Andrew Nestlé gave her. The chocolate didn’t melt, but diners loved the “chips” in the cookies and the idea stuck.
Ruth named her creation Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies. By the late 1930s, word had spread of the Toll House Inn’s delicious cookies, and eventually, the innkeepers entered into an agreement with Nestlé to print her cookie recipe on the back of the packaging used for their chocolate chips.
