Buying Guide
Theater seating and gaming seating have a lot of things in common, since both activities involve sitting in one spot for an extended amount of time. The most important feature in a chair is comfort, but you’ll also want to think about features like automatic reclining, massagers, storage compartments, cup holders, charging ports and the size.
Gaming chairs are usually sold solo, but you might want to get units with two or more seats plus integrated tables for an in-home theater. The first decision to make when deciding on home theater seating is the size, though. You should determine how much available space you have and check the measurements on the product guides.
As for the material, genuine leather is always more expensive; gaming and theater fans might want to get a waterproof faux leather material if they plan to eat and drink when playing. Polyurethane (PU) leather is less costly, and in some cases, it looks and feels so lovely that you can’t tell the difference from the real thing.
Some manufacturers use leather gels, which are synthetic leathers often used in upholstery; these are breathable and quite comfortable. There are also fabric theater seating materials, which can provide a more casual, homier look if you prefer.
Set a budget, and don’t worry, because you can find inexpensive gaming chairs for under $150, high-end leather ones for thousands of dollars, and there are plenty for you to pick from. Also, keep in mind that if you need more than one chair, buying a unit with two or more costs less than buying individuals.
Black is the traditional color for theater seating, but there’s no reason why you can’t opt for different colors! However, the choices may be more limited if you’re going for genuine leather.

What to Look For
- An adjustable headrest is another excellent feature and allows users to move that top part around for the most comfort when watching screens.
- Manual recliners are more affordable, but the working parts can break. Power recliners can also malfunction; see if the seating has a warranty.
- A power lumbar feature offers extra back support.
- Integrated charging ports are great because you don’t have to run wires on the floor. Some are in hidden storage areas, while others are in open face plates.
- If you want extra room, look for seating with extra-large dimensions.

Theater seating is designed with comfort in mind, and some of them can be very attractive. On the flip side, many chairs gain notoriety for being very ugly. Some are profiled in an article posted by Architectural Digest. One of their choices is the 1986 “Marilyn” sofa, which resembles a pair of giant red lips with a bit of an underbite.
Another is the 2002 “Pesce’s Nobody’s Perfect Chair,” which is half natural color and half red with odd patterns; it looks pretty uncomfortable. And the 1959 “Jonquil” lounge chair is made from clear acrylic, with a rounded seat with a sad, lone cushion in the middle.
