Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

If you’ve ever wanted to save humanity from a deadly outbreak, you’ll love spending an hour playing Pandemic. You and your teammates must fight to contain four deadly diseases threatening the human race. Players must learn to work with their teammates to control outbreak hotspots and treat diseases.
Pandemic is an intense cooperative game that challenges players’ thinking. It’s a highly interactive game because players work together to choose actions. You can increase the game’s difficulty—with the harder modes adding extra epidemic cards—so you can grow with the game as you master it.
Not only is the game fun, but it’s also very instructive on public health and how diseases spread on a global scale. This game poses the question, “Can you save humanity?”. Plus, I love the emphasis on cooperation, decision-making, role-playing, and strategizing, all of which improved the more we played.
Despite the difficulty of this game, it’s a definite winner. The game pieces provide a good abstraction to the concept of epidemics, and the challenge will keep you coming back until you can beat it, and get the rush of exhilaration from the perfect mix of planning, teamwork, and luck.

What reviewers didn't like

I know, it sounds confusing—and it is. In fact, the steep learning curve is the major drawback of this game.
Make no mistake: this game is difficult. Play can change from “we’ve got this!” to “wait, how did we lose?!” in a heartbeat. Given the complexity of the game, it’s unlikely that younger players will be able to handle the game without a lot of coaching.
