Ahh, Glassdoor. We’ve come to rely on you as if you were a sage career counselor. You help steer us away from companies with bad work-life balance and lead us to the ones that get high ratings and give high salaries.
For the uninitiated, Glassdoor is a jobs and recruiting site that has a stash of juicy company reviews, salary reports and benefit reviews. Most recently, the site has mined its user-submitted data in order to release a report about the Top 25 highest-paying companies in 2017.
And consulting, finance and tech companies dominate the list.
Glassdoor’s chief economist, Andrew Chamberlain, explains in a news release that consulting companies are paying sky-high salaries because of “barriers of entry,” meaning that employers want consultants who have personal contacts, stellar reputations and a specialized skill set. And in the technology field, says Chamberlain, there’s still an active “war for talent,” largely because of the shortage of highly skilled workers (take note college students looking for majors).
These are the companies that are, on average, shelling out six-figure salaries to its employees. To compile the report, Glassdoor relied upon the salary earnings anonymously and voluntarily shared by employees.
Another note: The report is based on each company’s median total compensation from the past year.
