If you’ve ever ordered something online that you were seriously excited about, you know the wait to receive it can be excruciating.
Now, some big online retailers are reducing that wait time. Amazon announced a few weeks ago that it was in the process of changing their standard two-day shipping with Amazon Prime to next-day shipping. And on the heels of that news, Walmart announced that they’re rolling out free next-day shipping on a range of general merchandise items from Walmart.com, without a membership fee.
The new next-day delivery service will be available on eligible orders of $35 or more, with the specific assortment varying by customer location.
For now, the new delivery service is only available in Phoenix and Las Vegas, though it will be available in Southern California soon. The service will roll out gradually over the next few months; Walmart’s plan is to reach approximately 75% of the U.S. population this year, including 40 of the 50 major U.S. metro areas.
If Walmart’s NextDay delivery service is already in your area, just go to the NextDay delivery section of Walmart.com to see the eligible items. After adding them to your cart, proceed to checkout just as you normally would. Of course, cut-off times vary by location, so be aware that delivery may not be the next day depending on what time you placed your order.
The new next day delivery is obviously good for customers, but Walmart says it makes good business sense, too.
“Contrary to what you might think, it will cost us less — not more — to deliver orders the next day,” Marc Lore, president and CEO, Walmart eCommerce U.S. said in a press release about the next-day delivery service. “That’s because eligible items come from a single fulfillment center located closest to the customer. This means the order ships in one box, or as few as possible, and it travels a shorter distance via inexpensive ground shipping. That’s in contrast to online orders that come in multiple boxes from multiple locations, which can be quite costly.”
You’ll also find same-day pickup in Walmart stores and free two-day shipping on a variety of items. You can even pick up your groceries or have them delivered depending on your location.
